What is IPTV? A beginner's guide

IPTV explained in plain language: how it works, what you need, the difference between providers and players, and how to get started.

The short answer: IPTV is television delivered over the internet instead of a cable, satellite or antenna signal. Instead of tuning a broadcast, you stream channels through an app on your device.

How IPTV works

Traditional TV sends every channel to your home at once, and your TV tunes into one. IPTV is different: your device requests the channel you want, and it streams over your internet connection, much like YouTube or Netflix.

This means:

  • You need a reasonably fast internet connection
  • Channels are delivered as streams, not broadcasts
  • You usually access them through an app called an IPTV player

The two pieces you need

To watch IPTV you need two things:

  1. A source. This is your IPTV provider subscription or playlist. It is where the channels come from.
  2. A player. This is the app that connects to your source, shows the channel list and programme guide, and plays the streams. Tevium is a player.

It is important to understand the difference: a player supplies no content. You bring the source, the player organises and plays it.

What is an M3U playlist?

An M3U playlist is a simple text file that lists channels and their stream URLs. Providers often give you an M3U link you paste into your player.

What is Xtream Codes?

Xtream Codes is an IPTV server system many providers use. Instead of a playlist link, your provider gives you a server URL, username and password, and the player talks to their server directly. This usually includes a nicer guide and on-demand content.

How to get started

  1. Choose a provider you trust (or use an M3U playlist you already have).
  2. Install an IPTV player such as Tevium on your device.
  3. Add your provider details or playlist link.
  4. Browse the guide and start watching.

Frequently asked questions

Is IPTV legal?

IPTV itself is a technology and is legal. The legality of the content depends on your provider and whether they have the rights to the channels they offer. Use sources you trust and have rights to.

Do I need a VPN for IPTV?

Not necessarily. Some people use one for privacy or to avoid their internet provider throttling streams, but it is not required.

How fast does my internet need to be?

A stable connection of around 10 Mbps is usually enough for HD streams, and 25 Mbps or more is comfortable for 4K.
